Mochovce 3: Nuclear authority issued a draft decision on fuel loading
Slovenské elektrárne is approaching the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 commissioning. The Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (UJD) issued a draft decision for fuel loading. “This means that at the beginning of the summer, we will be able to load fuel into Unit 3. In the worst case, it will be the end of 2020,” said Branislav Strýček, CEO of Slovenské elektrárne on 18 February 2020.
According to Mr. Strýček the draft was preceded by many technical tests and verifications. All the authorities involved in this procedure will have time to comment on the draft decision by 15 April 2020. UJD will then issue a decision to load fuel at Mochovce 3.
The verification of the preparedness of Unit 3 for operation also included two international reviews by the International Atomic Energy Agency (Pre-OSART Mission) and another one by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO PSUR).
The missions ended in December and January and found no obstacles to the commissioning of Unit 3.
- After cold hydrotesting, hot hydrotesting and extended revision, Slovenské elektrárne performed reheating of the primary circuit in the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020.
- In December and January, the company successfully performed the primary circuit pressure and leakage test, the pressure tests of all steam generators, the tests of back-up diesel generators, tests of essential service water flow, tests of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning and other systems.
The new nuclear units in Mochovce will have an installed capacity of 471 megawatts (total 942 MW), which will cover about 13% of the total electricity consumption in Slovakia.
