Nuclear power plants are equipped with a system of multiple protective barriers to prevent the leakage of radioactive elements into the environment, which is monitored continuously. The reliability of each barrier individually is high and the probability of all of them failing at once and radioactive material dispersing into the environment is very low.
If, in spite of everything, such an event occurs, plans and measures have been prepared, in accordance with Slovak and EU legislation, and will be implemented to protect the plant employees and local residents.
An event at a nuclear power plant in which several protective barriers are breached or could be breached simultaneously with a risk of radioactive substances leaking into the environment.
You will be made aware of a radiation event by the WARNING system, in which a siren sounds supplemented by spoken information.
When the siren sounds, make sure that it is not a planned test.
More detailed information on hazards (leakage of radioactive substances, floods, natural disasters, leakage of hazardous chemicals) will be provided by announcements on town and village broadcasting systems or public radio and television channels.
Check that your neighbours have heard the warning and understood it.
Shelter
Enclosed, brick-walled spaces provide the best protection from the effects of radioactive substances.
Iodine prophylaxis
Prevents the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland. Iodine prophylaxis is dispensed to local residents through town and village offices.
Protection of the body surface and respiratory tract
The airway must always be protected when moving in an open area – e.g. during evacuation or closure of farm buildings, etc.
Evacuation
Carried out when there is a necessary time limit on how long persons can stay in the affected area.
Effectiveness of improvised respiratory protection:
Get out of the open and take shelter in a house or apartment. Seal and close all windows and doors.
Put out the fire in any device for burning solid fuel, close the chimney dampers and gas inlet.
