The joint-stock company Slovenské elektrárne was founded on the 21st January 2002 as a new entity of the estate and the legal successor of the original Slovenské elektrárne, a.s., of which the assets of the Slovak power grid operator SEPS and the heating company Tepláreň Košice were spun off.

The main activity of the company Slovenské elektrárne, a.s., is the production and sale of electricity. The company is the largest producer of electricity in Slovakia and one of the largest in Central Europe. In addition, it produces and sells heat and provides ancillary services for the electricity grid.
As of December 31, 2025, Slovenské elektrárne operated 31 hydropower plants, two nuclear power plants, two photovoltaic power plants, and one battery energy storage system with a total installed capacity of 4132 MWe.
The company's goal is to safely, reliably, efficiently, and competitively produce, sell, and trade electricity and heat, to handle radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel safely, and to permanently reduce the impacts of production processes on the environment. Thanks to a balanced mix of production sources, the company generated 100% of its electricity in 2025 without direct local carbon dioxide emissions.
