Following the commissioning of Unit 3 at the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant, all efforts on the Mochovce NPP Units 3 and 4 (MO34) project are focused on the completion of Unit 4. After hydrostatic tests and revisions in 2025, Unit 4 will be ready for another significant milestone in the life of the power plant – the initial fuel loading into the reactor. However, this is preceded by a licensing process by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic, which is currently underway.
Completion and commissioning of Units 3&4 of the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant (MO34) will make a significant contribution to meeting Slovakia's and the EU's commitments to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The electric power of each new unit will be 471 MWe and will cover 13% of electricity demand in Slovakia. Compared to coal and gas power plants, Mochovce NPP Units 3 and 4 will prevent the release of at least 5 mil. tons of CO2 emissions annually.
On 25 August 2022, the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority issued the final authorisation for commissioning of the Mochovce NPP Unit 3. The first turbine was connected to the grid on Tuesday, 31 January 2023.
Construction of the new units is the largest private investment in the history of Slovakia that encompasses Slovak and renowned foreign companies working on the construction site. Mochovce 3 and 4 is one of the largest and most important projects that have created a number of jobs in Slovakia: there were nearly 7,000 workers on the site at peak. Mochovce has altogether created 15,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs. Occupational safety at construction site is the top priority; over 125 million manhours were worked there with 54 months from the last registered injury as of 1 December 2025, which is world class performance.
